Pope Francis Appoints 21 New Cardinals, Including Vatican Ambassador to the US
Pope Francis has announced the appointment of 21 new cardinals, including Archbishop Christophe Pierre, the Vatican's ambassador to the United States, Archbishop Robert Prevost, who oversees the appointments of Catholic bishops globally, and Archbishop Victor Manuel Fernández, the new head of the Vatican's doctrinal office. The installation of the new cardinals will take place during a consistory on September 30, symbolizing the unity of the global church and the connection between the pope and dioceses worldwide. Of the 21 new cardinals, 18 are eligible to participate in a papal conclave. The total number of eligible cardinal electors will be 137 after the September 30 ceremony.
