Classic Veggie Burger Recipe

Ingredients

For the Veggie Patties:

  • 1 cup canned black beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1 cup canned chickpeas, drained and rinsed
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup grated carrots
  • 1 cup bread crumbs
  • 1/2 cup rolled oats
  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 egg (or flax egg for vegan option)

For Assembling the Burgers:

  • 4 whole wheat burger buns
  • Lettuce leaves
  • Sliced tomatoes
  • Sliced red onions
  • Sliced pickles
  • Vegan or regular cheese slices (optional)
  • Ketchup, mustard, or your favorite burger sauce

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Patties:

    1. In a large bowl, mash the black beans and chickpeas using a fork or potato masher until they form a coarse paste.
    2. Add the chopped onion, minced garlic, grated carrots, bread crumbs, rolled oats, and chopped parsley to the bowl. Mix well.
    3. Add the soy sauce, olive oil, ground cumin, paprika, salt, and black pepper. Mix until all ingredients are well combined.
    4. Add the egg (or flax egg) to the mixture and stir until the mixture is moist and holds together.
  2. Form the Patties:

    1. Divide the mixture into four equal portions and shape each portion into a patty about 1/2 inch thick.
  3. Cook the Patties:

    1. Heat a non-stick skillet over medium heat and add a small amount of olive oil.
    2. Cook the patties for about 5-7 minutes on each side, or until they are golden brown and firm. If using cheese, add a slice on top of each patty during the last minute of cooking and cover the skillet to melt the cheese.
  4. Assemble the Burgers:

    1. Toast the burger buns lightly if desired.
    2. Place a lettuce leaf on the bottom half of each bun, followed by the veggie patty.
    3. Top the patty with slices of tomato, red onion, and pickles.
    4. Add any additional toppings or condiments you prefer, such as ketchup, mustard, or a special burger sauce.
    5. Place the top half of the bun on the burger and serve immediately.

Enjoy your homemade classic veggie burger!
