How scammers are using your Snapchat, Facebook and TikTok posts in their AI schemes

According to Morgan Wright, the chief security adviser for SentinelOne, scammers are now using data from Snapchat, TikTok, Facebook, and other social media sites to carry out ransom crimes using fake voices and images generated by artificial intelligence (AI) programs. As a result, social media has become a reconnaissance tool for transnational criminal groups and those who engage in human trafficking.

Wright explains that scammers isolate their victims and use deepfake voices that are so believable that the victim will comply with their demands without questioning. Recently, there have been two blackmail scams involving AI in Arizona where criminals demanded ransom using AI-generated voices of family members. In both cases, the criminals used AI to replicate the voices of their victims' loved ones, making the ransoms more credible.

Wright adds that scammers are becoming more proficient in using AI for their illegal activities. They can recreate any voice they want, whether it was recorded on TikTok, Facebook, or any other social media platform. Therefore, it is essential to be aware of how AI is being used in crimes, and there need to be clear boundaries to prevent encroachment on personal freedom and personal space.

The victims of such crimes are often emotionally vulnerable and believe that their loved ones are in danger. Hence, it is crucial to exercise caution and stay informed about how personal data shared on social media can be misused. The experience of Jennifer DeStefano and her daughter, who were targeted in Arizona, serves as a warning to others about the potential dangers of sharing personal information on social media.

In conclusion, the misuse of AI technology by scammers poses a significant threat to individuals and society as a whole. It is crucial to raise awareness and establish clear boundaries to prevent the misuse of personal data and ensure the safety and security of all individuals.
