Why is the Gulf of Mexico not a sea?

Why is the Gulf of Mexico not a sea? Both oceans and gulfs are large bodies of saltwater, but gulfs are smaller and are bordered on three sides by land. Oceans, the largest bodies of water in the world, have no exact boundaries, and they are bordered by seas (the Caribbean Sea separates the Gulf of Mexico from the Atlantic Ocean).

Why is the sand white in the Gulf of Mexico?

The sand is made from pure white quartz crystal, which came from the Appalachian Mountains at the end of the last Ice Age and was deposited into the Gulf of Mexico.
