Why is Notre Dame still closed? Notre Dame remains closed since the fire accident around six years ago. For around two years France's authorities have been working on making the cathedral stable for reconstruction and visitors. Overall, the authorities believe tourists will be able to visit this monument in 2024.

How long did it take to build Notre Dame?

Construction of Notre Dame Cathedral began in 1163 and took over 100 years to complete. The main hall was constructed first with the towers, embellishments, choir and chapels added over time until it was finally finished in 1345.

Can Notre Dame be saved?

But now, the cathedral's rector has raised doubts as to whether Notre-Dame will be salvaged at all. Monsignor Patrick Chauvet tells Jeffrey Schaeffer and Angela Charlton of the Associated Press that the historic building is so fragile there is a “50 percent chance” it cannot be saved.
