Why is it so dark in the middle of the ocean at night? Such a minuscule amount of light penetrates beyond a depth of 200 meters that photosynthesis is no longer possible. The aphotic zone exists in depths below 1,000 meters. Sunlight does not penetrate to these depths and the zone is bathed in darkness.

As the sun sets, fishes, squids, shrimps and zooplankton make massive migrations from the dark ocean depths upward to near the ocean's surface. Despite the small size of some (no bigger than a mosquito), these creatures can travel hundreds of meters in just a few hours.
