Why is Barbados a water scarce country? With few streams and rivers above ground, most freshwater is sourced from aquifiers beneath the island. Wells and boreholes allow access to water from these underground caves and streams. But climate change is causing sea levels to rise, resulting in salt infiltration that reduces even further the supply of freshwater.

With almost 98 percent of the groundwater resources fully developed and with the more frequent occurrences of droughts, the island has started to experience some water supply issues in the high elevation areas of the island as well as a rise in salinity levels in the coastal aquifers.
