Why do New York streets have two names? The streets are long enough that it is convenient and necessary to divvy them up into East and West. Manhattan is (for the most part) laid out in a grid pattern. The east-west streets are numbered, the North-South avenues are usually numbered but in some cases just have names (Amsterdam, Broadway, etc.).
