Why did Machu Picchu fall? Mainstream historians blame smallpox, measles, and/or syphilis for Machu Picchu's decline. The Spanish, who brought these diseases into Latin America, were close by in Cusco. If traders traveled into Machu Picchu, they could have brought the diseases with them.
