When was the M1 constructed?

When was the M1 constructed? The M1 motorway connects London to Leeds, where it joins the A1 near Aberford, to connect to Newcastle. It was the first inter-urban motorway to be completed in the UK; the first motorway in the country was the Preston Bypass, which later became part of the M6.

Where did the M1 originally start?

The forgotten urban motorway. Opened in 1959, the first length of the M1 ran from Watford (present-day junction 5) to Northamptonshire. Through the 1960s the motorway was progressively extended north into Yorkshire.
