What is the story of the Icehotel? Every year, when Torne River turns to ice, a new Icehotel is created in the small village of Jukkasjärvi in the north of Sweden. The ice of the river transforms to design and architecture - an ephemeral art project and the world's first, and largest hotel built of snow and ice.


Why does the Ice Hotel not melt?

The skeleton of the hotel is made of steel and concrete and is covered with 2,000 square metres of insulation. The roof has 20-centimetre insulation to protect the ice from melting in summers.

There are no bathrooms in the IceHotel unless you pay a LOT for a suite. During the day you go out the front door and a 1 min walk back to the warm lobby for the bathrooms and changing areas. At 6 pm , when the front door is locked, you go out the side door for a 15 sec walk into the warm lobby.

How comfortable is the ice hotel?

All rooms in Icehotel Winter have curtain doors (the Art and Deluxe Suites in Icehotel 365 all have doors). The curtains froze solid overnight – but our Ice Hotel issue boots were fine to wear. Cold – but not frozen. If you enjoy camping, you'd probably find a night in the Cold Room quite comfortable.


Why is the Icehotel required to be built every year?
