What is roll and yaw?

What is roll and yaw? What are Roll, Pitch, and Yaw? Imagine three lines running through an airplane and intersecting at right angles at the airplane's center of gravity. Rotation around the front-to-back axis is called roll. Rotation around the side-to-side axis is called pitch. Rotation around the vertical axis is called yaw.

Why does an aircraft not spin when you roll the aircraft?

At least one wing must be stalled for a spin to occur. The other wing rises, decreasing its angle of attack, and the aircraft yaws towards the more deeply stalled wing. The difference in lift between the two wings causes the aircraft to roll, and the difference in drag causes the aircraft to continue yawing.

Why do planes not fly straight up?

Flight plans need to account for the curvature of the earth when they are created. Since the earth is three-dimensional, it would be impossible not to fly in an arc. Another reason that planes would choose to fly in a trajectory that resembles an arc is to account for the amount of traffic that will be in the air.

Do pilots fly manually?

Pilots typically fly the plane during take off and landing. The pilot manually controls the plane until it reaches the required height. This usually only takes about five minutes. After that the pilot will usually engage the auto-pilot.
