What do you need to know about ULEZ?

What do you need to know about ULEZ? Ulez already exists, and has done since 2019. Under the scheme, cars and vans that don't meet certain emissions standards (Euro 4 for petrol and Euro 6 for diesel) have to pay a £12.50 charge to drive into the Ulez zone. TfL says this means around 10 per cent of vehicles have to pay.

Can you drive within ULEZ without paying?

If your vehicle doesn't meet the ULEZ emissions standards and isn't exempt, you need to pay a £12.50 daily charge to drive within the zone. This applies to cars, motorcycles, vans and specialist vehicles (up to and including 3.5 tonnes) and minibuses (up to and including 5 tonnes).

What are the rules around ULEZ?

If you drive within the ULEZ area across two days, for example before midnight and after midnight, you will have to pay two daily charges. These are in addition to any Congestion Charge that applies. (Cars and motorcycles are not subject to the Low Emission Zone (LEZ)).

How many cameras are in ULEZ?

There are roughly 2,800 Ulez cameras dotted around London, although TfL has not released a definitive list. Because the zone was originally in central London, many of the cameras are in the inner boroughs of the capital. Since the expansion on August 29, TfL has installed more cameras in the outer boroughs.

How much is the ULEZ penalty charge?

Cars, vans, motorcycles, mopeds, caravans, and minibuses can all be landed with a £180 penalty, payable if they have not paid their ULEZ charge correctly or on time. Note that there is a heightened risk of receiving a PCN if you pre-pay your ULEZ charge by post fewer than 10 days before travel.

Do I have to pay the ULEZ charge in advance?

The ULEZ is enforced by cameras that are able to read your number plate as you drive anywhere within the zone and will automatically detect whether or not your vehicle meets the ULEZ emissions standards. As with the congestion charge, drivers can pay in advance or on the day of travel online using the TfL site.

What happens if you drive through ULEZ?

ULEZ charges Non-compliant vehicles will have to pay £12.50 per day to enter, on top of the congestion charge (£11.50 per day). If you don't pay, you face a £160 fine per day.
