Was Versailles damaged during ww2?

Was Versailles damaged during ww2? On 14 June 1940 the Germans entered Versailles. They seized the estate and raised the swastika over the roof of the palace. Over the coming weeks, a large number of soldiers and officials flocked to the palace, visiting the museum and even causing damage to some of its rooms.

Why was Versailles destroyed?

Versailles was only a village at the time. It was destroyed in 1673 to make way for the new town Louis XIV wished to create.

Does Versailles still smell today?

While it smells fine now, hygiene practices (or the lack thereof) in France during Louis XIII's reign meant that the palace smelled like urine, fecal matter, and more. Some claim that a lack of toilets in the palace even led some visitors to relieve themselves behind curtains and pillars.
