Is the Mount Nebo Scenic Loop open? Mount Nebo Scenic Byway is closed to traffic from late November until late May due to snow blocking the way. The road typically gets opened by Memorial Day, weather permitting of course.


What class is Mount Nebo?

Peak Summary Mt. Nebo is a rockier Class 2 hike that utilizes a segment of the Continental Divide Trail and is located in the heart of the Weminuche Wilderness. The closest vehicle access is the Beartown/Kite Lake trailhead north of Hunchback Pass. 4WD with good clearance is required to reach this trailhead.


Is the Nebo Loop free?

No passes or entrance fees are required to enter the Nebo Loop. However, some areas, such as many campgrounds, do require passes. Check with the US Forest Service when planning your trip for updates on seasonal conditions, such as wildfires, early snow, etc.


Where does the Nebo Loop start?

To access the byway from the north – from Interstate 15 take Exit 248 in Payson, heading east on 800 South. Turn right onto 600 East, which becomes the Nebo Loop Road (FR 015) into the mountains. How hard is Mount Nebo?

At 11,928 feet, with over 3000 feet of gain, this is likely considered a moderate+ or difficult hike by most. The distance (8-9 miles) and elevation gain wouldn't be too terrible, except the elevation gain seems to come all at once in two short sections, making this a thigh buster.


Can you see the Dead Sea from Mount Nebo?

The landscape is home to stunning surroundings and one can look out at the Dead Sea, Bethlehem, and on a clear day, even Jerusalem. The Memorial Church of Moses also rests at the summit, which also provides a significant visit for Christians.
