Is Maui based off a real God? Maui or Maui is the great culture hero and trickster in Polynesian mythology. Very rarely was Maui actually worshipped, being less of a deity (Demigod) and more of a folk hero. His origins vary from culture to culture, but many of his main exploits remain relatively similar.


Did Maui hold up the sky?

Lifting the Sky Maui also sought out an old woman and drank from her gourd, giving him the great strength he would need to lift the sky. After a great struggle, Maui was able to push the sky beyond the mountains, lifting the edges over the wide expanse of the ocean, where it remains to this day.
