Is Iona in the inner or outer Hebrides? Iona is a tiny island off the southwest coast of Mull in the Inner Hebrides. It is only 1.5 miles wide by 3 miles long, with a population of around 170 permanent residents. Despite this, Iona has a special place in the heart of many people the world over.
What happened at Iona?
The Iona Abbey was first attacked by Viking raiders in 795, with subsequent attacks taking place in 802, 806, and 825. During the 806 Viking attack, 68 monks were massacred in Martyrs' Bay, and this led to many of the Columban monks relocating to the new Columban Abbey of Kells in Ireland.
Who lives on Iona?
Iona is a small, fertile, crofting island, currently inhabited by around 130 people. The island is farmed largely by traditional methods. The National Trust for Scotland works in partnership with its tenant farmers to ensure that rare species, such as the corncrake, are conserved.
