Is Highlands NC worth visiting? The landscape of Highlands is remarkable. Western North Carolina is home to the Blue Ridge and Smoky Mountains of the southern Appalachians, these mountains are blessed with an abundance of gorgeous waterfalls. Within 10 miles of the town, there are nine falls worth viewing.

Great little mountain town. Somewhat upscale, friendly people, great restaurants and nice shopping.


Can you visit the Highlands without a car?

While it is not as quaint as other Highland towns, Fort William was definitely the most workable in terms of being in the Highlands without a car. The Jacobite Steam Train goes directly out of the station twice daily. Fort William is also big enough that we were also able to get a private day tour to the Isle of Skye.
