As long as you stay on the main streets and don't take short cuts through alleys, you should be fine on Kalakaua or Kuhio anytime before 12AM or after 6AM, especially in a larger group. I never felt unsafe and I stay in that part of Waikiki, off Kuhio, and 2 of 3 times was there solo/female.
