How much did it cost to build the Wentworth Woodhouse? Commissioned by Thomas Watson-Wentworth, the first Marquess of Rockingham and great-nephew of the Earl of Strafford, he ordered his new home to replace the house that Strafford had built. It took nearly twenty-five years to complete, and cost an estimated £82,500. In today's currency, that is approximately £9,500,000.

Here, the area of Little Germany and the streets around Forster Square were redressed for post-Glasnost scenes. Filming also took place nearby at Wentworth Woodhouse, the home of the Earls Fitzwilliam, recently seen in Downton Abbey and Churchill biopic Darkest Hour.

The Preservation Trust offers guided tours of the house and gardens. While not all the rooms are open, the tours help to tell the story of this great estate.

Infuriated, Thomas Wentworth used his skills as a soldier and diplomat to plot revenge. Within a few years he had bought, extended and renamed his own house and estate, just six miles away from Wentworth Woodhouse, at the estate we now know as Wentworth Castle.


Who owns Wentworth Woodhouse now?

The house is now owned by the Wentworth Woodhouse Preservation Trust whose sole purpose is regeneration of the site for the benefit of South Yorkshire. The house is now open to the public, Tuesday to Sunday, for morning tours, afternoon free-flow exploration and events.
