Has anyone gone in Mariana Trench? In 1960, Navy Lt. Don Walsh (along with Swiss oceanographer Jacques Piccard) became the first person to descend to the deepest part of the ocean, the Challenger Deep in the Mariana Trench. Walsh went on to teach ocean engineering, and remains a passionate advocate of ocean exploration.
