If you start at the Excalibur main station, the monorail will take you directly to Mandalay Bay - about a 3-minutes trip. If you start from Mandalay Bay, you will stop at the Luxor and then the Excalibur - about a 7-minutes trip.

I would only recommend using the monorail if you are actually staying in a hotel directly connected to a stop. It is a good value and efficient in its own way, but the stations are not easily accessed from the Strip itself and even from the casinos they are connected to. Does the Luxor have hidden fees?
The Luxor was a good, clean and comfortable hotel. Rooms were very spacious and we had a good view. Beware when booking that you are paying a resort tax on top of your room price - it adds about another $21 a room per night on top of your bill.
