Do you need ID to ride VIA Rail? VIA Rail is committed to ensure the security of its passengers and may request to validate identification. It is your responsibility to verify that you have the necessary valid photo identification when you travel with VIA Rail.
Do they check bags on VIA Rail?
We invite passengers who wish to travel with more items than allowed by our hand baggage policy to use the trains offering our baggage car service. Please note that baggage must be checked at least 45 minutes before departure at terminal stations and 30 minutes at intermediate stations.
Is WIFI free on VIA Rail?
VIA Rail is proud to provide complimentary Wi-Fi service on board most of its trains, in its Business lounges and in select stations in the Québec City – Windsor corridor. Note that Wi-Fi is also offered on board the Ocean train (Montreal - Halifax) in the service cars located on either side of the dining car.
Are there movies on VIA Rail?
VIA Rail's On-Board Entertainment portal is the only system of its kind on a train in North America. It will present movies and other programming from the NFB and CBC/Radio-Canada collections, in addition to regular daily newscasts from CBC/Radio-Canada.
How early should I be at VIA Rail?
We recommend arriving at least 20-30 minutes before the departure time to prepare for the boarding process. If you are unfamiliar with the departure station, it's always good to leave extra time to find your way around!
Do VIA trains have bathrooms?
VIA Rail does offer WiFi, power outlets, bathrooms, and snacks for sale on board most of its trips. Please keep in mind that since these are complimentary it is within the carrier's rights to not offer them on specific routes or if there are technical issues outside of their control.
Can I bring my own food on VIA Rail?
You can bring your own food on the train (as meals are not included in Economy class), however there are also snacks, meals, and beverages available to purchase on board with cash or credit. Are train tickets cheaper if you book them in advance?
The earlier you book your tickets, the more likely you are to get the lowest fare available for the dates you want on the routes along your journey. You may book your travel up to 11 months in advance.
Can I just buy a train ticket on the train?
Onboard. In most circumstances, you must purchase a ticket before you board a train. On most Amtrak trains, only the full, undiscounted, unrestricted fare will be available for purchase onboard the train. This is regardless of reservations made or fares previously quoted by ticket agents, Amtrak.com or elsewhere.
Is it better to purchase your ticket at the station or on the train?
Higher fares usually apply when purchasing tickets onboard the train. To secure the best available fare, passengers should purchase tickets prior to boarding the train.
Is it best to reserve a seat on a train?
Some trains require them. A reservation is good for a specific seat in a specific car, on a specific train on a specific date between 2 cities. Seat reservations aren't always necessary, if you don't like to plan ahead, but be prepared not to have a seat on a crowded train.
Can I travel to Canada with my US birth certificate?
Canada requires proof of citizenship or resident status to enter the country under §§14(3) and 14(4) of the Passport and Travel Documents section of the Immigration Regulations of Canada (enclosed). A birth certificate is one form of proof.
