Do you have to present your Railcard? If you bought your Railcard at a station, both the paper printed Railcard and the photocard must be presented. Failure to present a valid Railcard will mean you have to pay a full fare or you may on certain services be liable for a Penalty Fare.


Can someone else use my Railcard?

The Railcard is for your use only, and provides discounts only on tickets bought for your own use.


Can you have a Railcard on two phones?

You can store your digital Railcard on up to two devices at a time. If you want to add it a third, you will need to remove it from one of your existing devices using the steps descirbed above.


Do all railcards need a photo?

Under 'Choose the type of Railcard you would like' you can select if you want a 'Digital' or a 'Plastic' Railcard. You will be asked to provide a digital passport-style photo if you select 'Digital'. You do not need a photo if you have ordered a 'Plastic' Network Railcard.


Are railcards only for UK residents?

You don't need to live in Britain or be a UK citizen to be eligible. However, they can only be posted to UK addresses. Buy in person at a staffed railway station (each railcard is different, so it is best to check beforehand with Railcard Help to see if there are any documents that you will need to bring with you).


Can I put a physical Railcard on my phone?

Unfortunately you can only have one version of your Railcard – either plastic or digital.


Can I add my Railcard digitally?

After ordering your digital Railcard you will be sent an email which contains a download code. You will use this download code to add your digital Railcard on your phone or device.


Does Railcard check ID?

You will be asked to provide either a passport or driving licence number or EEA National Identity Card and you will also need to provide a digital passport-style photo if you have selected 'Digital' under 'Choose the type of Railcard you would like' section.


Do I need a physical copy of my Railcard?

Using your Railcard You can get your Railcard in a digital format to be stored in the National Rail Railcard app on your phone or tablet, or as a physical card. You can use your Railcard to buy tickets online, at a ticket office, from a ticket machine, and over the phone.


How do I use my Railcard digitally?

Open the app*, and tap on the + symbol in the top right hand corner to get started. Select Add an existing Railcard at the top of the screen. Enter the download code you received in an email titled Your digital Railcard download code, and click continue.

Can I use my railcard to buy a ticket for someone else? Many railcards allow you to buy tickets for people who are travelling with you. You cannot buy tickets with a railcard discount and give them to someone who will be travelling alone without a railcard.

If you forget your Railcard you will either be required to buy a new ticket or you may on certain services be liable for a Penalty Fare. However, a train company will normally allow you to claim back this extra expense on the first occasion in each year where this happens.


Can I use my boyfriends Railcard?

No. The Railcard is for your use only, and provides discounts only on tickets bought for your own use. It does not cover anyone accompanying you.
