Why is it called Beaver Island?
Beaver island was first called the Isle du Castor (Island of the Beaver) around 1744 and Beaver Island appeared on a map around 1755. Some sources state is was named for it's shape, that of a beaver, and that beavers were introduced to the Island around 1901.
