Do dogs think you left them when you go on vacation?

Do dogs think you left them when you go on vacation? Some dogs might indeed feel left behind. They might associate your packed bags with prolonged absence. Their whining, the pacing, or even the destruction of home items is their way of coping. It's heartbreaking to think they might see our vacation as abandonment.

Is it okay if I leave my dog home alone for 8 hours and 5 days a week?

If possible, dogs older than 6 months should not be left alone for longer than 4 hours at a time. If this is difficult, the absolute maximum time for them to be alone is 8 hours, but this is only recommended if your dog has a way to get outside for a bathroom break.
