Can you use a UK plug without the top pin? The pin is still necessary as it operates the shutters found in most socket outlets. Not all appliances utilise the earth pin, but all BS1363 Sockets require the earth pin to be present or the covers over the live and neutral won't retract and the plug won't go into the socket.
