Can you turn off the flight data recorder? There is no switch for the FDR, but there is a circuit breaker and by pulling this you are removing aircraft power from the FDR. However, this does not mean you are necessarily turning it off, as some FDR can be equipped with an internal power supply as a backup to aircraft power.
Can a flight recorder be tracked?
Such recorders are fitted with locator beacons. These broadcast their location for up to 30 days, even when submerged as deep as 6,000 meters (20,000 ft) underwater, which increases their chance of being found.
