Can you appeal against ULEZ? In 2020/21, almost two fifths of 11,597 closed congestion zone and Ulez appeals were upheld. 'You have 28 days from the date you receive a penalty charge notice to appeal.


Can you drive within ULEZ without paying?

If your vehicle doesn't meet the ULEZ emissions standards and isn't exempt, you need to pay a £12.50 daily charge to drive within the zone. This applies to cars, motorcycles, vans and specialist vehicles (up to and including 3.5 tonnes) and minibuses (up to and including 5 tonnes).

If you are parked but don't drive, you don't need to pay the ULEZ charge. The ULEZ is enforced by cameras that are able to read your number plate as you drive anywhere within the zone and will automatically detect whether or not your vehicle meets the ULEZ emissions standards.


Is ULEZ refundable?

You can amend or apply for a refund for some Congestion Charges, Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) charges and Low Emission Zone (LEZ) charges. You can amend charges for today and future dates. We can only give refunds for future dates. Single day charges can't be refunded, apart from LEZ charges.


How successful is ULEZ?

Report shows that the ULEZ has reduced harmful pollution levels in central London by nearly half compared to what they would have been without the ULEZ. Each day, 74,000 fewer polluting vehicles are seen driving in the zone, a cut of 60 per cent since expansion in October 2021.


Can you pay ULEZ the day after?

If you do need to pay, charging days run from midnight to midnight, every day of the year (except Christmas Day). You can pay by midnight on the third day following the journey or up to 90 days in advance.


How is ULEZ monitored?

There are no barriers or toll booths. Cameras read vehicle number plates driven through the zone, which are checked against our database to see if they meet ULEZ emissions standards. Advance information signs appear on major roads, indicating the distance to the boundary.
